It depends from the vendor.Perhaps thecus provides firmware updates or you have to acess to a Linux console.
In case you are able to acess your box thru ssh or telnet, the problem became... how do I install mldonkey on Linux? Very Happy

It's not easy to esplain.I suggest you to search deep into the forum I suppose the topic, manal install is already covered (in the wiki also)

If you modify the NAS (this i know works on the 4500N) by adding a 3rd party admin mod it gives you ssh shell access..another trick will give you root..making it so you can modify the existing MLNet install, BUT MLNET itself is a plugin app, it would be easier to just make a custom new plugin with CVS compiled version for the CPU(listed below is the 4500N's cpu) and installing it, so you have more control over it, if anyone else has a promise nas or experience with running on these types of CPUs im interested in making an "addon" for the promise series of NAS which will most likely include a PHP page to modify the configs if for some reason the default wont load properly
Code:
processor       : 0
cpu             : e300
revision        : 1.1 (pvr 8083 0011)
bogomips        : 265.21
chip            : MPC83xx
Vendor          : Freescale Inc.
Machine         : mpc83xx sys
core clock      : 399 MHz
bus  clock      : 266 MHz
PVR             : 0x80830011
SVR             : 0x80570011
PLL setting     : 0x6
Memory          : 128 MB
